The author captures the hardships of African-Americans by describing her family and the trials that they endured. The story is told through the voice the author as a young girl.  She tells the story of how her uncle generously took care of the men in the county by being a traveling barber. The uncle was trying to save money to open his own barbershop, however he spent his savings on the care of his young niece (the author) when she became sick.   However, after persistence and determination the uncle opened his own barbershop, despite the hardships of the Great Depression.
