OBAMA STEERS CAMPAIGN AWAY FROM NASCAR
Monday, July 21, 2008

It certainly would've given a whole new meaning to the term "presidential race," but alas, there won't be a Barack Obama-sponsored car in NASCAR's Sprint Cup series after all.

The Democratic presidential hopeful had reportedly been in talks with NASCAR to be the hood sponsor of the No. 49 Toyota at the August 3rd race at Pocono. But Team Obama ultimately decided not to move forward.

Team spokesman Rhett Vandiver told The Associated Press on Friday that the team has made a sponsorship proposal to the Democratic presidential hopeful's campaign, as well as to the campaign of Republican John McCain and at least one third-party candidate.

The car, by the way, will be driven by Ken Schrader – who has given thousands of dollars to the campaigns of various Republican politicians.
